General Info: Cryptologic Technicians Interpretive are the Navy's linguists. They specialize in analysis of foreign naval developments, radiotelephone communications and preparation of statistical studies and technical reports requiring knowledge of a foreign language. Language training is open to men and women in Arabic, Russian, Spanish, Chinese, French, Korean, Vietnamese, Hebrew, Persian and Tagalog. A test ( Defense Language Aptitude Battery (DLAB) ) must be taken at MEPS or wherever it can be arranged, a minimum of 100 is required. Based on the DLAB scores, school quotas, and requirements, students will be assigned to any of the following languages: DLAB score of 100-109 qualifies personnel for Spanish, French, Hebrew, Persian-Farsi, Russian, Vietnamese and Tagalog. A DLAB score of 110 is required for the Arabic, Chinese and Korean languages.
What They Do:
The duties performed by CTIs include: operating sophisticated state-of-the-art electronic radio receivers, magnetic recording devices, computer terminals and associated peripherals in the communications signals environment; operating sophisticated, computer-assisted information systems; working with classified material; translating, interpreting and transcribing foreign language communications data; analyzing and reporting highly technical information of strategic and tactical importance to fleet commanders and national intelligence agencies; performing temporary duty aboard a variety of naval surface and subsurface vessels and aircraft.

Notes: Security Clearance, (TOP SECRET) Required. SSBI originated at Recruit Training Command (Boot Camp). Both the applicant and his/her immediate family members must be U.S. citizens. A waiver for U.S. citizenship requirement for immediate family may exist due to a compelling need. Only DONCAF may authorize this based on CT ECM's recommendation for severely undermanned CT branches. Moral turpitude offense(s) are generally disqualifying. Personal security screening interview will be conducted by a Naval Security Group Command special representative. Former members of the Peace Corps are not eligible. Must be a high school graduate or equivalent (GED, CPT, home study or other equivalency). If not a diploma graduate, applicant must provide a high school transcript verifying successful completion of the 10th grade. Males may be assigned to duty in submarines or duty involving aerial flight. Females may be assigned duty involving aerial flight.
Technical Training Information:
Enlistees are taught the fundamentals of this rating through formal Navy schooling. Advanced computer technical training is available in this rating as part of normal career development.
